A warm welcome, a listening ear, a place to be

We help build better futures

We do this by being alongside families and developing relationships based on truthfulness, trust and accountability and by acting in a compassionate and gentle way.

The main group of people supported are from the Roma migrant community, but anyone is welcome to seek support.

Our work enables people to be social; to have somewhere to belong; to integrate into community life, to develop self-esteem, learn English, and receive an education and meet their basic physical needs. We also enable people to access welfare benefits and become employable and participate in the legal jobs market. When asked about the support from the project beneficiaries told us:

“… I am liberated

Nobody helps us like The Space…”

“Life is easier now
“I am learning to speak English, my mind is more open
I am more comfortable speaking to people
I am more intelligent now
"Children are in school
“I  respect The Space and The Space respects us

At The Space we deliver support across the following streams of activity:

Community Drop -in

Focuses on building relationships and access to essential resources and includes the Project Community Shop where families can purchase essentials at prices they can afford.
Community Integration & Advocacy
We broker relationships & accompany families to appointments and provide advocacy to progress complex issues i.e., welfare benefit applications, debt, utilities, and housing evictions.
Building Better Futures
Supports personal growth to enhance wellbeing & self-esteem & the development of skills needed to improve life chances.
Building Community
As an area where racial tension is palpable, we build relationships with other ethnic groups to build social trust and social cohesion.

As part of The Louise Project, The Space is also involved in developing two new initiatives:

Building Enterprise

We offer supported employment opportunities, including, sessional work, an interpreting service and a project community shop.
Building for Social Justice
We tackle systems, structures and the barriers people present that perpetuate poverty and keep people living with hardship.

“We are Roma… we are not used to being treated like this”.
